Who commits crime in Ethiopia?
Crime in Ethiopia
What is crime? Briefly defined crime is a word used to describe varieties of illegal activities committed both by certain citizens of a nation or national governments on its own people. During invasion of one nation by another, crimes could also be committed in various forms.
What types of crimes could there be? Crimes may be committed in several different forms the following being just a few: genocide, murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, etc, etc.
Genocide is a crime usually committed either by a government on its own people or during invasion of a sovereign country by another foreign power, where a certain group of people belonging to a certain religion or tribe is completely wiped out summarily. Such an act was committed when Italians invaded Ethiopia in 1935-36 just prior to the Second World War. Italy then used the international prohibited poison gas to undermine the vigilant opposition of Ethiopians against colonialism. The mustard gas bombs contained a corrosive liquid which, when exploded, emitted lethal vapors that penetrated the human skin and produced both internal and external lesions that ultimately killed the victims.
As a result of a failed assassination attempt by two Ethiopian freedom fighters on Rudolfo Graziani, the leader of the invading Italian army, on February 19, 1937, the Blackshirts, the Italian fascist occupation army, unleashed a ferocious terror, where the atrocities included beheading, burning down houses, disemboweling pregnant women and summarily wiping out of all educated men and women including religious figures such as monks and priests. Graziani proudly telegrammed his superior Mussolini where he said “nothing anymore remained” of the priesthood of the medieval Debra Libanos Monastery. That is a naked form of genocide committed on Ethiopians by the Italian army with a full knowledge and backing of the government in Rome.
The Degue Government of Ethiopia led by Colonel Mengistu Hailemariam, after overthrowing the aging Emperor Haile Sellassie I in 1974, unleashed yet another round of crime against his own people. In its so-called Red Terror, the Dergue targeted anyone who opposed the military regime or was suspected of having any link with or sympathy for the EPRP, the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party, the main opposition party then, regardless of age, religion, gender or ethnicity. To intimidate its political opponents the Degue’s killing squads left the corpses of their victims on public streets for many hours often with notices around their necks labeling them as counter-revolutionaries. Worse still, the Dergue prevented bereaved families from mourning these so-called “counter revolutionaries”. In some cases, the families were required to participate in state-organized public demonstrations supporting these extra-judicial killings.
The Dergue regime was toppled by a nationalist group called the EPRDF, the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front, on the 28 of May 1991. But that didn’t make the political situation better. Crimes continued to be committed by the new government consisting entirely of a minority national group who is using the principle of “divide and rule” to stay on power. Despite the genocidal trial against Dergue members, EPRDF itself has committed an act of genocide on the Anuak people, a minority group in the south-west of Ethiopia, the Oromo people, the largest national group in the country, and the Amharas, the next largest national entity in the country. Mass arrests, beatings, tortures and extra-judicial killings are everyday activities in the present day Ethiopia. Radio and TV jamming are major activities of the government. Journalists are imprisoned in mass. Political opposition party leaders are imprisoned and harassed. Thus crimes committed by the government itself far outweigh those petty crimes committed by individual citizens.
From among petty crimes worth mentioning, we have pick-pocketing, “snatch and run thefts, including from occupied vehicles, highway robbery, including carjacking by armed bandits, kidnapping for money, sabotage on railways. Even here there are crimes master-minded and instigated by government backed bandits so as to make the crimes appear as committed by opposition fighters.
We can therefore conclude that crimes are frequently committed by governments against the people than individual citizens committing crimes. Even those who are engaged in pick-pocketing and snatching are dictated by conditions of survival.

OLF on the right path
OLF on the right path
All Ethiopians welcome the return of OLF to its motherland. It is a decision taken in the right direction. Uniting its struggle with rest of Ethiopians OLF will surely come to a successful completion of its struggle for the freedom of Oromos and their brothers and sisters in the vast territory of Ethiopia. This is a decision filled with vision and inspired of wisdom. Of course it was not easy to make such a historical turn. Both the Meles and Issaias regimes surely will be unhappy of such a drastic turn in the struggle of the OLF. Neither of these regimes want to see Ethiopians stand firmly united in defence of their natural and political rights. For such a united camp against oppressors will surely lead to inevitable victory. Unity of the people is the only way out against all oppressor regimes who stand in the way of their quist for freedom and liberty. It looks as if that time has now come and the Ethiopian people must grab this opportunity and intensify their struggle hand in hand with the Oromo people against the common enemy, Woyane. Now is the time either to win or perish. Woyane is now in great danger. It is at the peak of its disperation and frustration. It will surely strike in all directions to prolong its life expectancy. But that will be in vain. The Woyane clique is at a point of no return but its inevitable and sure downfall. Let us all Ethiopians join hands and help the Woyane go down the hill in the highest speed possible. Let our people be free of the Woyane grip at last. Let Ethiopians breath the air of freedom and declare their liberty from all sorts of dehumanization and oppression.

What should be done to redeem our country?
Ethiopia is currently facing a serious problem threatening its very existence. Up to 12 million people are expected to suffer from starvation which has become part and parcel of Ethiopia since several decades ago. A large number of Ethiopians are currently dying of the hunger engulfing a large part of the country.
As if starvation is not enough, Ethiopia is becoming a bitter place to live in for its citizens. They are deprived of all civil, human and political rights. The country has turned to a large single prison.
The great Ethiopia, which we once inherited from our forefathers, is gradually turning to a disrespected, discredited, hunger-stricken, small African state with its people watching its gradual destruction silently. Ethiopians have been stolen of their pride and courage to save their motherland and have been turned to simple on-lookers of their own fate. The country that has become land-locked for a decade and a half ago is now loosing its fertile western and eastern borders sizing 30 - 60 km in width and 160 km in length to the Sudan. Though oppressive all the previous Ethiopian governments managed to defend our country's territorial integrity from all sorts of foreign aggression and forwarded to us a land whole and intact. The current Woyane-led government is unsurpassed in it's crimes committed against the very territorial integrity of Ethiopia. First, Woyane advocated for the independence of Eritrea and then granted it without Ethiopians having their voices heard. The country, under Woyane's rule, gave away its right to outlet to Red Sea making itself one of the few land-locked countries in the world. It was the Woyane leaders who strongly debated disfavoring Assab even against their ally, the USA, who was willing to leave the Assab port under Ethiopia's administration. The Ethiopian people were forced to accept this shameful action under gunpoint of the Woyane military who were roaming in the capital to see to it that no one reacted against. And then is the Badme case where after 100000 young people from both sides have been left offer given to Issayas Afeworki.
And now it is the Sudan who is on the cue to get its share. To keep the Sudan from supporting Woyane opponents from acting from within the Sudan, land donation was the best alternative. Since border issue is a sensitive one, the donation has to be done in great secrecy and with a subtle design of denial when uncovered.
It is such a government we have in Ethiopia; a government that does nothing when a large number of the country's population is starving; a government that left the country land-locked and exposed the country to the shameful begging of Djibouti to let us use its ports; a government that sells out large areas of Ethiopia to a foreign nation; a government that is engaged only in aggrandizing itself as regards political power and economic enrichment; a government unequalled in lies and pretensions; a government that has prohibited freedom of speech, organization, press and the like; a government that has made the Ethiopian people to be ashamed of their historical legacy, culture, religion, and identity; a government that has made it a crime to talk about a united Ethiopia, an Ethiopia of prosperous past history, a pride Ethiopia who defeated all colonial powers and preserved its territorial integrity. The Woyanes hate mention of our beloved leaders that have done a great deal in defence of Ethiopia such as Menelik.
It is a government that is arrogant and with no willingness of listening both to internal and international critics. It is a government by one man who acts the Prime minister, the Chief of Staff, the Head of the press, the court, the police, the ministry of finance and so on and so forth. And that Man is Meles Zenawi, a born dictator who needs to be removed willingly or unwillingly if mother Ethiopia is to be saved. Of course this requires that opposition forces stop fighting one another and channel all their energy and resources, both material and intellectual towards a central and timely most dangerous enemy, Meles Zenawi and his surrogates. May God help Ethiopia.
